Crossroads of the Funk

I am from Dayton, Ohio and I completed a research paper on the Funk music groups from my home town during the 1960′s and 70′s. There were about 15 acts that had their origins in Dayton, Ohio. I don’t have much time to write, so I will list a majority of the acts:

The Ohio Players, Roger Troutman & Zapp, Slave, Steve Arrington’s Hall of Fame, Sun, Heatwave, Platypus, Faze-O, Shirley Murdock, The System, Lakeside, Junie Morrison, Otha Stokes, New Horizons, Dayton and Aurra. Also some of Slave’s members went to Mtume.

I wrote a 74 page research paper about it and discovered that James Brown “invented” Funk and George Clinton popularized Funk, but the Ohio Players were the real musical innovators of Funk. They mastered the musical structure that all other 70′s Funk bands produced during that time period. Even George Clinton emulated the musical prowess that the Players provided.

My goal is get the Ohio Players recognized by the Rock-N-Roll Hall of Fame for their contributions to the defining of Funk Music during the 1970′s. Their role was critical, because Funk was the platform for American dance music during the 70′s. That is an amazing feat that I believe needs to be recognized. Please help me spread the word and let me know if you would like a copy of my research paper.

Yes A Lot Of LEGENDARY FUNK Groups Did Come Out Of The DAYTON OH Scene. Those Must Have Been Some AMAZING Times! Most Of Those Groups You Mentioned Are From OHIO But I Think Some Members Of SLAVE/AURRA Where From NEW JERSEY? And THE SYSTEM Was From NEW YORK CITY. Goodluck With The ROCK&ROLL HALL OF FAME, FUNK Music Is Not Respected Only By Us FUNKAHOLICS. Peace ;) FONK FOR LIFE

    Hello,

I too would like a copy of your research paper. I know I'm extremely late. I'm from Ohio (Akron), and a product of the 70's and 80's. I recently was perusing the net looking to read up on lesser known (to the masses anyway) groups, particularly Dayton and New Horizon, but anything you have would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    E-Mo

Please send the paper, if possible, to:

I just heard about this great article.Myself I grew up on the west side of the city and use to see some of these
bands while a paperboy for a local paper. I even had a bass guitar that somebody tricked me out of for some drugs. This was during the heyday of Slave when they first hit with Slide. I also use to stay in a rooming house with
Carter Bradely of Slave the real original keyboard player with Slave. Listent to the first 3 Lp's and you can hear him, plus seem him on the first Slave LP and the 3rd LP,The
Concept. I was more of a roller skater and al these funk
jams were big hit's at the roller rink's.
One place in particular was a place called Skateland.
It seemed like sometimes we were always jamming to music
    by local bands.
By being under that influenced,I wanted to be a DJ at one point and even went to CSU in Wilberforce and came out
with a degree in Radio/TV but I never got the type of
shot I wanted to really be a DJ in the city.
So in time,I gave that up.
Plus by then radio had gotten real commercial and it was to much for me to want to be bothered with.
I think that a special greatest hit CD collection of
all the top dance, roller skate cuts that came from all
the groups should be put out and maybe you or somebody
write the linear notes of it. It would be a classic and might bring back some pride to the city and especially
    the west side.
If you were to ask me one thing that thru this vibe off ?
It was the crack cocaine trade and another thing was when
the old WDAO was bought out and the urban radio format was
    changed.
So in closing, check out my Face Book page where I DJ now
with a lot of classic FUNK from that era.
My email is peter_slaughter@yahoo.com and send me copy also.

Yes, if you still are sharing your funk document, I'd really appreciate a copy or link to read. I too grew up in the Gem City and to this day am keeping the funk alive! Also, I would be happy to send you a few of my home brewed original mp3 tracks to show my appreciation.

    Thanks again,

I am from Dayton as well and would like a copy of your research paper too. I never tire of telling people about my hometown's contribution to funk music! Thanks!

  29. Sunny Lexington |

MAN!! I'm also a Daytonian and you just dont know how much I appreciate this post. I just started a production company mainly for hiphop music, and I am constantly explaining the connection that Dayton has to todays music. We all know that Dayton's funk bands were the biggest influence on the funk genre, but little is said about the influence they've had on hiphop (through sampling). A huge chunk of funk samples in hiphop music if from Dayton funk bands.
I'm not sure if your research paper touches on this point, but I would love a copy of it. Thanks again!

  30. STAZE_ONE |

Heya, this is STAZE-ONE from the other side of this phonkey planet. Germany to b exact. I been into to funk ever since i started listening to oldschool and goldenage hiphop in the mid-80ties. The shit is still hot as hell: The other day i smuggled some ZAPP, MTUME, DON BLACKMAN, CON FUNK SHUN AND SLAVE-Tunes on my daughters (14) ipod – and ya know what? She loved it. Her schoolfriends freaked out on it, too. They‘ve neva heard bout these kinda artists before though, hehe. Feed a new breed man. Keepin the funk alive, right? As i read about your paper i was really stoked. I always liked the Dayton sound. Just perfect for poplocking. If theres a chance to send your paper as a pdf-file, dat be supadopaliciouzzz.
